Knee Replacement Abroad: Costs, Ranked Hospitals and Recovery for US Patients

Knee replacement abroad is a total knee replacement in a Latin American hospital, with the last part of recovery at home in the US.

A total knee replacement costs $7,000 to $15,000 in Latin America and $30,000 to $60,000 without insurance in the US.

Medical Tourism Packages sends your X-rays and health history to a surgeon, who confirms you are fit to travel. We then arrange your hospital, travel and recovery stay, and set up follow-up with your doctor at home. Our team speaks English and Spanish.

Why patients choose Latin America

US patients choose Latin America for lower prices and highly ranked hospitals. The 2026 Newsweek and Statista ranking for knee surgery and knee replacement lists 99 private hospitals in the region. Mexico has 22, Colombia has 21, Argentina has 10, and Costa Rica and Panama have one each.

Candidates for knee replacement abroad

You may be a good candidate for knee replacement if you have moderate or severe knee pain, even at rest, or a knee deformity. Most patients are 50 to 80 years old. There is no absolute age or weight limit, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

Age over 60, overweight, smoking and an earlier clot all make a leg-vein clot more likely, according to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS). Talk to your own doctor about clot prevention before you travel if any of these apply to you. Travel for this surgery only if a doctor at home can take over your care afterward.

How the trip works

A knee replacement trip follows five steps.

  1. Records review: A surgeon studies your X-rays, health history and medicine list.
  2. Quote: You get a price that lists each item it covers.
  3. Arrival: You meet your surgeon in person before the operation day.
  4. Surgery and hospital stay: Most patients start knee exercises a few hours after surgery, according to the AAOS. The hospital stay usually lasts 1 to 4 days, according to the NHS.
  5. Recovery stay: You stay near the hospital for therapy and wound checks until your surgeon clears you to fly home.

Flying home after knee replacement

Short-haul flights may be possible after about 6 weeks and long-haul flights after about 3 months, according to UK NICE guidance cited in a 2023 review.

Clot risk stays higher for up to 6 weeks after surgery, and a long flight raises it further. Most people wear compression stockings for at least 6 weeks, according to the NHS. Do these four things on the flight:

  • Compression stockings: Keep well-fitted, below-knee stockings on for the whole flight.
  • Seat: Book an aisle seat, which may lower clot risk.
  • Ankle pumps: Point and flex your feet often while seated.
  • Cabin walks: Stand and walk the aisle whenever the seatbelt sign is off.

Seek medical help at once for new calf pain or swelling, sudden shortness of breath or chest pain.

Revision knee replacement abroad

Revision knee surgery replaces or repairs a knee implant that has failed. More than 90% of modern knee implants still work well 15 years after surgery, according to the AAOS. A revision is a longer and more complex operation than a first knee replacement, and it needs extensive planning. About 15% of patients need a second revision within 10 years of the first, according to the UK National Joint Registry.

Send us the surgeon’s notes from your first operation, your implant records and your recent X-rays or other scans so the surgeon can plan the revision. Read our guide to joint revision surgery in Argentina for what a revision trip involves.

Recovery and follow-up at home

Full recovery from knee replacement can take 6 months or more. Most people resume daily activities within 3 to 6 weeks and drive again after 4 to 6 weeks, according to the AAOS. Return to work usually takes 6 to 12 weeks.

Your doctor at home receives your therapy plan and surgical records and checks how your knee heals.

Questions US patients ask about knee surgery abroad

These answers cover cost, safety, timing and insurance for US patients.

How much does knee replacement abroad cost?

Knee replacement abroad costs $7,000 to $15,000 in Latin America, depending on the country and the hospital. The same operation costs $30,000 to $60,000 without insurance in the US, based on a 2026 estimate.

Is knee replacement abroad safe?

Serious complications after knee replacement, such as a joint infection, affect fewer than 2% of patients, according to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Blood clots are among the most common complications, and you leave with a clot-prevention plan for the flight home.

How long should I stay abroad after knee replacement?

Plan to stay abroad until your surgeon clears you to fly home, and expect a longer wait before a long-haul flight than a short one. You spend most of that time at a recovery stay near the hospital, with therapy and wound checks.

When can I fly home after knee replacement?

You can fly home on the date your surgeon approves after checking your knee and your clot risk. Ask your surgeon to give you that date in writing.

Does Medicare or insurance pay for knee replacement abroad?

In most cases, no. Medicare usually does not cover health care outside the US, so you pay all costs yourself. Private plans differ. Call your insurer before you book and ask whether it covers care abroad or follow-up care at home.

What does a knee replacement quote include?

Most quotes for a total knee replacement include the surgeon's fee, anesthesia, your hospital days, the implant and the first therapy sessions. Flights and lodging are quoted separately. Medical Tourism Packages also confirms accepted payment methods and the deposit.
